We adopted him from Dog and Kitty City, a no-kill shelter in Dallas. He was born on May 29th, so he's about 9 weeks old. He's a big guy for his age, his front paws are pretty big, so we're thinking he'll be a big kitty when he's older. He loves to be around us, especially since we have to keep him locked up in the guest room while we're at work. His favorite person is Andrew: BY FAR!! He gets so sad whenever Andrew walks out of the room, he tries to follow him and he cries for him to come back. And Andrew can't deny that little Dewey has completely stolen his heart with his big ol' purr!
A couple of days ago, he gave us a HUGE scare. There is apparently a "chute" down each side of the fireplace, and Dewey climbed right up and fell down in there. I was hysterical, I was crying so hard, but Andrew stayed calm, and figured out that there was a small, dirty space underneath the fireplace floor. We couldn't get Dewey out ourselves, Andrew tried, so we called the apartment emergency maintenance people. Right before they were going to get here, Dewey found a way to crawl back up the metal pipe he fell down and crawled out. I was so relieved, I cried even harder and immediately held him tight and kissed on him.
He was filthy, so we had to bathe him. I think we got lucky, he was shaking SO HARD from being trapped and scared, that I think he was still in shock when we were bathing him and he didn't try too hard to get away. He let Andrew blow-dry him, and we snuggled him on the bed. He was so happy to be out of there!! He scared us!
But he was up and playing in no time. Earlier in the week, the shelter e-mailed us to ask us how he was doing, and I sent back a letter just gushing about how wonderful he was. So they forwarded it to the foster mom who had raised him, and she sent back ideas for toys that he had loved at her house. So we went to Wal-Mart and bought a few of them, and sure enough: he loves them! His favorite is the "Bug Chaser", it's got two balls in separate tunnels that he can "chase" around in a circle, moving it with his paw. And he tries to attack the little crinkle-butterfly on top. Andrew went and set it up while I was snuggling him after the ordeal, and it really cheered him up!
Until we get a screen or figure out the best way to block off his access to the fireplace, we have cardboard and a box there, and we watch him every second to know where he is while we're downstairs. He sleeps with us at night and is locked up in the guest bedroom with all his toys during the day, so he only comes downstairs when we're here with him.
He is so cute when he's sleeping, too. He has "claimed" the little glass side table in the living room as his, so we keep that clear for him. He won't fit on it once he grows up, though! He sleeps on the back of the sofa when we're down here for the most part.
Here is Dewey getting ready for a nap: gotta make donuts and lick his blanket!
And we discovered that if we eat at our lift-top coffee table, Dewey has ANOTHER spot to snooze in, hahaha.
We bought him a cool carrier for his trips out. We left it out for him to play in so he was used to it a little bit. Andrew took him up Saturday to get his claws trimmed and to have his ears cleaned out. When he got dirty under the fireplace, I didn't know if we should put soap and water in his ears, so we let the grooming place at Petsmart clean them out. Apparently he made a big fuss, hissing at people and other animals. Andrew said he was crying so much in the carrier on the way home, that he let him out so he could wander around in the truck. What a pushover!!
We bought a little hand-held vacuum to clean up his cat litter messes (he throws it EVERYWHERE when he's in there!), and he has adopted the box as a play-thing for himself. He loves it!!
We also got a laser pointer, which he loves.
But he's also perfectly content with shoes, the railing on the stairs, and our feet.
We got him this long stick with a cluster of feathers on the end of it for him to play with. When we drag the feathers around, he's not as interested. But if we turn it around and drag the stick end on the ground, he stalks it and chases it like crazy!
So today Andrew made me breakfast. We were watching "Diners Drive-ins and Dives" last night, and saw a place that made banana bread French toast, and we both decidedd that it sounded good!! He'd made chocolate chip banana bread Friday night, so we already had that much. He also had bought the sausage links I loved that Kat made us in Kansas, so we had a yummy breakfast this morning! We didn't have maple syrup, so we used a little chocolate syrup since there were chocolate chips in the bread. Sweet, for sure, but really good!!
Later we went out and did a little shopping. We got placemats and napkins for our dining room table, along with a fruit basket for the middle of the table (the pictures don't do the placemats justice, they are precious!!!). We also bought this clock we've been wanting for over our mantle, and it was $60.00 off the original price at Bed Bath and Beyond! Plus we had a $10.00 off coupon, and a $25.00 American Express gift card for my 5-year anniversary at work, so it was a great day to save our money while shopping
Andrew also hung up the bulletin board in the kitchen.
Dewey's been just chilling in the sunshine by the patio door. We opened the blinds for some light, and he instantly laid around in the warm sunlight.
So I'm sure that you can't tell that we adore our little baby, right?? Hahaha! We are so blessed to have Dewey to love and care for. Andrew is nuts about him, as am I, and Dewey seems very happy and content with his new home. I hope you all get a chance to meet him while he's still a playful little kitten!
Hope you all have a great week!!
