I am SHOCKED to see the late Michael Jackson's family there: his brothers, his mother, his children. What an incredibly cool honor for the contestants!! Looking forward to the contestants doing AWESOME this week.
Josh is up first, could be a big flop for him if he's not super careful. He's playing the guitar for the first time in the competition. He's singing "Dirty Diana", which actually is one of my favorite MJ songs. I don't like it starting out at all, the chorus was a good rock interpretation. But the parts between the choruses was kind of lackluster, in my opinion. He was bound to have a bad week, I don't think this will send him home. "A" for effort in trying to make the song his own style. It didn't work, but he tried and was semi-successful. Just not enough...
Up next is Brian. I'm sickened to think about how he's going to mangle a song by such an iconic artist. He's doing "Black or White" and I was just as disappointed as I thought I would be. I'm disappointed that Simon and I disagree on this, we usually are of one mind.
Drew is up first for the girls. And I don't think she's doing anything different with Billie Jean. On American Idol, David Cook completely flipped this song on its ear by being slow-rockish. And he did it much better than Drew did. I actually agree with Paula and LA that JUST ONCE this girl needs to do something slightly more up-tempo. Even if it's something BARELY fast, like "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillet. I know she's wanting to showcase what kind of artist she plans to be. But to appease the judges and show America you're diverse: do SOMETHING different one time. But. I don't think she ever will.
Nicole is completely incapable of giving Simon's contestants a fair shake. She goes after something EVERY TIME just to get under Simon's skin. Simon gives her contestants credit when credit is due. ***ATTENTION FOX: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET RID OF THAT JUDGE FOR NEXT YEAR!!!!***
Rachel is next, and I feel like Simon probably gave her something from YOUNGER Michael Jackson's repertoire. "ABC" or something. But I have no idea what song she's singing. Never heard it before. She looks cute, though, and she sounds pretty good. I think she's moving around a little too much, she doesn't seem used to bopping around AND singing just yet. "It's obviously anti-Simon night" was the understatement of the night. The judges aren't being fair, they want to bug Simon and they're going after two girls that are younger than 16. Just rude and immature. Simon's girls are all still here, so clearly he's doing SOMETHING right to help his girls. Nicole has one person left, Paula has none.
Marcus theoretically should do SO WELL this week, his voice will be suited to this sound. He seems like he's trying too hard. I started this show out with him being one of my favorites, he just blew me away. And I don't think LA has him living up to his potential. I was disappointed vocally (and the song choice could have been something MUCH better, HE should have sung "Black or White"), however I did think the choreography was a great tribute. I do like him, though, but I've gone into this week thinking that Marcus and Brian need to go home, they are the two worst singers at this point.
Chris is next, and I'm worried about him. He's singing "I'll Be There", and that's such a stretch for him. He's not that strong of a singer, and he can't hide in a song like that. I did love his little rap part, but I think this was an overall weak performance. I still love this kid and want him to be the last person standing in LA's group. I do have to say, every time before, when they've flashed to MJ's kids, they looked bored and unimpressed. But they were clapping along and seemed to be more animated while Chris was singing.
Melanie's closing out the show, and she's doing a song I only slightly recognize. Horrible song choices, for the most part. There are such AMAZING songs: "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Man in the Mirror" to name two off the top of my totally tired head. That being said, Melanie's doing amazing. Sounds and looks incredible. I will be so shocked if she doesn't win this whole thing. Even NICOLE can't criticize it.
Two are leaving tomorrow night, hope America gets it right. It's nearly 1:00 in the morning, I'm going to bed. Good night, people!!
